Michael Carrick slams Man Utd

The Manchester United vs Tottenham reaction centred on Michael Carrick’s frustration after his side surrendered a late lead in a disappointing 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Bryan Mbeumo had put United ahead, but Dominic Solanke’s stoppage-time equaliser denied the Reds all three points, leaving Michael Carrick questioning his team’s inability to finish the job.

United appeared to have the advantage after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for a headbutt on Luke Shaw. However, despite playing against ten men, the hosts failed to protect their lead, allowing Solanke to divert Sandro Tonali’s cross past Senne Lammens.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Michael Carrick admitted his team had made life unnecessarily difficult for themselves and insisted they must learn to manage these situations better.

Slow Start Left United Chasing the Game

Michael Carrick did not hide his disappointment with United’s performance in the opening stages. His players were too slow in possession, struggled to find the right passes and failed to press Tottenham with the intensity required.

“We have mixed feelings. It’s not easy when you start a game like we did,” Michael Carrick explained.

He acknowledged that United struggled to establish their rhythm, allowing Spurs to exploit spaces and make life uncomfortable for the home side.

As the first half progressed, however, the Reds began to find their feet. Carrick was encouraged by the improvement towards the break and praised his players for responding positively after a difficult opening period.

The second half brought a much-improved performance, with United showing greater composure and attacking intent. Mbeumo’s goal eventually gave them the breakthrough they needed, seemingly putting Carrick’s team on course for victory.

Michael Carrick Furious as United Fail to Finish the Job

Despite taking the lead and having an extra player on the pitch, United could not find the decisive second goal that would have settled the contest.

Michael Carrick believes his team should have managed possession more intelligently, kept Tottenham under pressure and made the visitors work harder to regain control.

“We showed that spirit, belief and fight to keep going and put ourselves 1-0 up. It was a game we should kill off, but we didn’t find a way to do that,” he said.

The manager was particularly frustrated by United’s tendency to surrender possession too cheaply. Rather than controlling the tempo and forcing Spurs to defend, the hosts allowed the game to remain open.

That failure proved costly when Solanke struck late, turning what looked like a winning afternoon into another disappointing result.

Michael Carrick also admitted that the equaliser was avoidable, insisting the entire team needed to defend the sequence more aggressively and show greater determination when protecting a lead.

While the late equaliser overshadowed much of United’s performance, Bryan Mbeumo provided a bright spot with an excellent finish to put the Reds ahead.

The forward continued to demonstrate his attacking quality, earning praise from his manager for his contribution and versatility.

“Bryan’s done great. It was a fantastic finish again,” Carrick said.

He welcomed Mbeumo’s continued goalscoring form, although the manager would have preferred the strike to prove decisive rather than become a footnote in another frustrating draw.

Late Goals Continue to Haunt United

The most concerning aspect of the result for Carrick was the failure to see out a match in which United had held the advantage.

The Manchester United vs Tottenham reaction highlighted a familiar frustration: United had put themselves in a position to win but could not maintain their defensive discipline when it mattered most.

Carrick acknowledged that conceding late goals has become a problem. He believes his players must become more ruthless, defend as a unit and show the composure required to protect narrow leads.

Despite his disappointment, the manager pointed to the improved second-half performance as a reason to remain positive. He urged his players to learn from the setback rather than allow it to undermine their confidence.

Carrick Turns Attention to Atletico Madrid

United must quickly move on, with a challenging trip to Atletico Madrid next on the agenda. Carrick admitted there is plenty to improve but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to win games if the players maintain their belief and respond to the challenge ahead.

“We need to do better and we need more points, of course we do,” he said.

For Carrick, the message is clear: United must turn promising performances into results. Against Tottenham, one late lapse undid much of their hard work. Greater control, defensive discipline and composure will be essential if they are to avoid repeating the same mistakes in their upcoming fixtures.
