Maguire Warning Follows Painful Home Defeat
The Maguire warning came straight after United’s 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. The centre-back, who captained the side, spoke to MUTV and made his message plain. The players have to improve.
Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored for the Cherries, who took all three points under Marco Rose. The result extended United’s winless run.
Bad Luck Does Not Excuse the Goals
Two of the goals carried an element of misfortune from United’s point of view. Maguire did not hide behind that.
His message was that the team must earn its own luck. He felt the errors were avoidable, and he put the focus on the first goal.

Maguire Warning Targets Set-Piece Defending
Maguire singled out the opening goal as the most damaging moment of the afternoon. He said United failed to defend a basic set play.
“You can’t slip and give a goal away like that. The third goal, yeah the wind had a massive part to play in that but the first goal is the most important one.”
He accepted that the second and third goals could prompt discussion about Leny Yoro and Senne Lammens. Even so, he kept coming back to the first.
“We don’t defend a basic set play. We can speak about Leny [Yoro] and Senne [Lammens, for the second and third goals] but the most important one is the first goal and the set play is just nowhere near good enough.”
Back to Basics When Results Are Tough
The captain argued that difficult spells demand discipline and hard work. In his view, doing the simple things well is the starting point.
“When things are tough and you’re not getting results you’ve got to dig in, you’ve got to do the basics well. Defending set pieces is part and parcel of the game and we’ve not been doing that well enough this season.”
His point was that set-piece defending is a regular part of the game, not an occasional problem. United, he said, have not matched the standard required so far this season.
A Pattern Is Forming
Maguire said this was not an isolated slip. He listed other games where set plays have cost United points.
“We’ve got to do more, we’ve got to improve more. We cost ourselves three points last week at Leeds with a set play, Hull, and then today the most important goal was the first goal. We’ve got to do more.”
The repeated message of “doing more” ran through his whole interview. It reads as a call to the entire squad.
Maguire Warning Shifts Focus to Chelsea
United now travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea next week. Maguire said the group needs to change its mindset before then.
The 33-year-old has played every minute of United’s Premier League campaign so far. He said he wants to get back on the pitch quickly after a result like this.
“When you’re coming off a result like that you want to play again as soon as possible. Hopefully we can have a good week, we can change the mindset, the confidence within the group, the belief and bounce back.”
He pointed to confidence and belief as the key areas to rebuild. Both are hard to find during a winless run.
There Is Still Time to Turn It Around
Despite the difficult start to the domestic campaign, Maguire insisted United can still recover. The season is young, and plenty of points remain available.
“The only good thing about the start of the season is that it’s still early on. There’s still so much to play for, so many points to play for, we can have a good season but we’ve got to improve and do more.”
He ended with a message for every player in the squad, himself included:
“As individuals and a team, we have got to do more.”
What the Maguire Warning Means for United
The captain has set out the problem clearly. Set-piece defending has cost United points more than once, and the basics must improve.
The trip to Chelsea is the next chance to respond. After this Maguire warning, the pressure is on the players to show they have listened.
