Carrick Remains Confident as Manchester United Target Big Turnaround

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick insists his side’s 2-0 Manchester United defeat against Atletico de Madrid in the UEFA Champions League was a game there for the taking.

Early pressure saw Pablo Barrios open the scoring in the first minute, giving the Spanish hosts an early advantage. Despite the early blow, United responded and created four major opportunities, with several falling to Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes. However, a 74th-minute red card for defender Leny Yoro following a VAR review left the Reds at a severe disadvantage, allowing Ademola Lookman to seal the win for Diego Simeone’s team five minutes later.

Reflecting on the match with Amazon Prime Video and MUTV, Carrick highlighted his team’s growth throughout the encounter:

“It is a tough enough place to come and to get the start we had obviously puts us in a more difficult situation but I thought we grew into the game. We had four big chances, big opportunities and the game can look very different. They were really good opportunities as well, they weren’t just little half ones. I thought we didn’t finish the first half particularly well, started the second half a little bit better and started having some control without having a real threat.

Then we had Bruno’s chance again, another good opportunity, and then the red card. That goes against us and then it’s difficult after that. It is mixed [feelings], understanding it’s a tough place to come anyway, they make it that way and we knew that and were prepared for that, but disappointed with the chances we had that we haven’t had more [goals].”

Encouraging Signals Ahead of Domestic Return

Despite the result, Carrick took plenty of encouragement from the way United handled possession and constructed high-quality chances against a notoriously disciplined defense:

“There’s probably not many teams that would come here and have those chances against them [Atleti], so we’ve done a lot of things good tonight. The game was really close and in the balance, take away that first minute which is a goal – obviously a major part of it – but take away that and we were right in the game going through the second half and I thought there was a really big finish for us.”

“We tried a little bit something different [tactically], I thought some of the in possession and playing through the pitch – we created the opportunities from it – was good at times. Defensively we probably let them switch the play too much, in terms of a detail in the game, I think we let them come out the opposite side of the pitch too much which put us on the back foot at times with faster attacks to deal with. But in the main, we actually dealt with that, Senne didn’t have a lot to do in the end. We feel the game was there for us, is the biggest thing, we could have and should have got more from it.”

Eyes Fixed on Elland Road Showdown

United now turn their attention back to domestic action with a historic rivalry match against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday. Carrick remains confident in his squad’s mindset:

“I don’t see the confidence as being an issue. I think to come here and respond [to conceding late against Spurs] and take the ball like we did and control spells and create chances, the confidence is there. There’s the big disappointment of not winning, of course, but what a great game [on] Sunday to prepare for. It’s a fantastic game for us, for the club, for the history, for the supporters. Everything to do with the game is a great game so we’ll be ready for that.”

“We need to find a way for sure [to produce winning performances again]. Tonight is a one-off game, which is very different – it’s the Champions League, it’s a tough place to come. In that sense, the bigger picture is a different story. We need to improve certain things, we’re doing certain things okay. But we need to win games, for sure.”

Tielemans Urges Squad to Stay United

Midfielder Youri Tielemans, who reached a career milestone by making his 100th UEFA competition appearance on the night, echoed his manager’s sentiments regarding team unity following the Manchester United defeat:

“[It is a] tough one. When you concede after a minute it is hard to get into the game straight away.

“We had more compactness at times, at times we were found out as they had the quality and were going to play through us.”

“We did well in spells and our character and energy was very good.

“It is very hard to say after a defeat that there are positives. We just have to work hard, to keep working and keep trusting in our structure.

“We have to keep working, keep trusting each other and be together on this.”
