Chelsea skipper Reece James has suffered a fresh setback after undergoing knee surgery, leaving manager Xabi Alonso looking for solutions during a crucial stretch of the season.
In light of the news, the Blues are already actively eyeing a Reece James replacement ahead of the January transfer window to secure long-term depth on the right flank.
James picked up the knee issue in training and subsequently missed Chelsea’s recent 5-1 victory over Bournemouth before undergoing a successful operation.
While the club has refrained from committing to an exact return date, reports indicate the 26-year-old right-back could be sidelined for up to three months.
Xabi Alonso Confirms Surgery and Outlines Recovery Plan
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming fixture against Everton, Xabi Alonso expressed his disappointment for the team captain while remaining confident in his squad’s depth.
“We are all disappointed, especially for him,” Alonso said.“He wanted to have a good start after the international break, but he picked up an injury.“The surgery has been successful. We are supporting him.

“I wish him the best recovery. We won’t set timelines, but we expect him to be out for several weeks.“It’s not going to be short. Whether it’s before or after Christmas then time will tell. It needs to be done properly.”
Despite losing their influential leader, Alonso emphasized that Chelsea have the necessary squad depth to navigate the busy schedule ahead.
“We have a big squad to deal with injuries,” he noted.
“We have four more games until the next break so I think we can manage well with the players that we have.”
Positive News on Emmanuel Emegha’s Fitness
Alongside the update on James, Alonso shared encouraging news regarding striker Emmanuel Emegha, who has been working his way back from minor fitness issues and is set to resume full team training next week.
“He’s going to be training next week but is still not 100% fit to be playing,” Alonso explained.
“At this moment he’s having little things, unfortunately he’s not been available but we are looking forward and when he feels good, he can help the team.
“It’s going to be difficult for defenders when he’s in good shape.”
Transfer Radar: Chelsea Eye £38m Benfica Starlet
With James facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Chelsea transfer decision-makers are already exploring the market for a viable Reece James replacement to reinforce the squad.
According to reports, Chelsea are preparing to launch a move for Benfica’s 18-year-old rising star Daniel Banjaqui.
The versatile teenager has broken into Benfica’s first team this season and reportedly holds a £38 million release clause in his contract.
Chelsea view Banjaqui as a top long-term target ahead of the January window, though they are expected to face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool, who are also closely monitoring the defender’s progress in Portugal.
