Premier League Matchweek 9: 10 Crucial Questions Ahead of Key Fixtures

Premier League Matchweek 9 promises several important encounters, with Liverpool hosting Arsenal in a potential title-race statement and Manchester United travelling to Chelsea in search of a much-needed victory. Across the weekend, Manchester City, Tottenham, Aston Villa and other sides also face significant tests that could influence their campaigns.

With the season approaching its first quarter, the latest round of fixtures offers opportunities for teams to build momentum, address weaknesses and improve their league positions. Here are 10 key talking points ahead of the action.

1. Can Liverpool launch their title challenge against Arsenal?

Liverpool’s recent improvement has brought them back into the title conversation. Three victories from their last four league matches have changed perceptions following an uncertain start to the campaign.

Their attacking quartet of Bradley Barcola, Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak is beginning to find its rhythm, while Andoni Iraola’s side have also shown greater defensive stability.

Liverpool have lost just once in the league this season and recorded four clean sheets in their last six matches. Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo have also made encouraging starts.

Sunday’s meeting with Arsenal could provide a major opportunity to announce their title ambitions. Victory would move Liverpool within three points of the reigning champions.

However, Arsenal have a strong historical advantage at Anfield, having avoided defeat in their last 13 Premier League visits, recording five draws and eight defeats for Liverpool. Their last victory there came in the 2012/13 season.

2. Can Manchester City avoid another defeat against Brighton?

Manchester City face Brighton after suffering their first league defeat of the season against Aston Villa.

City have struggled against the Seagulls recently, failing to win their last four Premier League meetings. Another defeat would mark their first consecutive league losses since August 2025.

However, Brighton’s attacking approach could create opportunities for City’s forwards. Fabian Hurzeler’s team regularly press high against stronger opponents, leaving space for opposition attackers to exploit.

Both sides have been particularly productive in front of goal. City lead the league’s expected goals rankings with 16.7, closely followed by Brighton on 16.2. Brighton have scored 23 league goals, while City have managed 20.

An open contest could therefore favour City’s attacking quality as they look to respond to their defeat at Villa Park.

3. Can Manchester United revive their season at Stamford Bridge?

Michael Carrick faces an important test when Manchester United visit Chelsea on Saturday.

United are without a victory in their last eight matches across all competitions, making a positive result particularly important for Carrick and the club.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are also searching for consistency following their 2-0 defeat against Tottenham. Xabi Alonso’s team have collected just seven points from their last six Premier League matches.

Their performances have also raised questions about their tactical approach. Chelsea are averaging 46 per cent possession and 344 successful passes per match, their lowest figures in those categories since 2003/04.

If United can reproduce the intensity and aggressive approach Tottenham displayed last weekend, they could have an opportunity to secure an important victory.

4. Is Tottenham’s revival gathering momentum under De Zerbi?

Two consecutive Premier League victories have lifted Tottenham out of the relegation zone and into contention for a place in the top half.

Roberto De Zerbi’s tactical ideas are beginning to take shape, with Spurs showing greater intensity when pressing opponents and recovering possession in advanced areas.

Since his first match in charge, only three teams have recorded more high turnovers (120) and won possession in the final third more frequently (72).

Their next challenge comes against Crystal Palace, who have struggled defensively. Palace have conceded 19 league goals, their highest total at this stage of a top-flight season since 1980/81.

They have also lost their last two matches without scoring. Another energetic performance could help Tottenham extend their winning run to three matches.

5. Will Hull or Ipswich take an important step towards survival?

Hull City and Ipswich Town meet in a significant encounter between two promoted sides who have each collected 10 points.

It is the first time since 2010/11 that two promoted clubs have reached double figures after eight Premier League matches.

Hull need a response after going six league games without a victory. Their opening back-to-back wins now seem a distant memory, making Saturday’s home fixture an important opportunity.

Ipswich also have concerns, particularly away from home. Gary O’Neil’s side have lost three of their four away matches, with their only victory coming against Crystal Palace in a game influenced by Axel Disasi’s 34th-minute red card.

A victory would provide either team with a valuable boost.

6. Can Fulham maintain their revival at Aston Villa?

Fulham have improved under Alvaro Arbeloa, with consecutive victories against Coventry City and Hull City lifting them off the bottom of the table.

Their possession-based approach has produced impressive numbers. Fulham are averaging 58 per cent possession, 505 successful passes per match and 86.7 per cent passing accuracy, all their highest Premier League figures since 2003/04.

However, facing Aston Villa represents a considerably tougher challenge.

Unai Emery’s team strengthened their credentials with an impressive 2-1 victory over Manchester City. Fulham must now demonstrate that their improved performances can translate into results against established Premier League opposition.

7. Can Leeds stop Bournemouth’s impressive run?

Bournemouth enter this fixture with considerable confidence after three consecutive 3-0 victories against AC Milan, Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Marco Rose’s side have made an impressive start, but Leeds United will provide a serious defensive test.

Daniel Farke’s team have conceded only six league goals, the second-lowest total in the division, although they have now gone four matches without winning.

Marcus Tavernier will be an important attacking figure for Bournemouth. The forward has already scored five Premier League goals this season.

However, Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford has recorded the league’s highest save percentage at 82.4 per cent, setting up an interesting contest between Bournemouth’s attacking threat and Leeds’ defensive resilience.

8. Can Morgan Gibbs-White inspire Nottingham Forest?

Nottingham Forest desperately need a victory after struggling for goals under Oliver Glasner.

Forest have managed just six league goals from an expected goals figure of 13.5, highlighting their problems in front of goal.

Morgan Gibbs-White has been one of their most creative players, creating 20 chances and leading the Premier League with seven big chances created. However, he has registered only two assists.

Brentford have conceded in eight of their 10 matches this season, offering Forest an opportunity to exploit their defensive weaknesses.

9. Can Sunderland take advantage of their fixture against Coventry?

Sunderland travel to Coventry City hoping to end a six-match winless run in the Premier League.

Regis Le Bris’ team have struggled to maintain their early-season momentum while balancing domestic and European commitments.

However, their fixture schedule may have contributed to their difficult position. Sunderland have faced only one team currently sitting 13th or lower, beating Fulham 1-0.

Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, have collected two victories since their promotion. Sunderland will see this encounter as an opportunity to get their campaign back on track.

10. Can Newcastle find consistency against Everton?

Newcastle United will look to build on their important 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace when they welcome Everton.

The result ended a difficult spell for Matthias Jaissle’s team, who had conceded four goals against both Coventry and Leeds in consecutive away defeats.

Nevertheless, defensive concerns remain. Newcastle have faced 138 shots, the highest total in the division, and rank fourth for expected goals conceded with 13.7.

Everton could provide an opportunity to improve those numbers. The Toffees have lost their last two league matches and scored just three goals in their previous five Premier League games.

Another victory accompanied by a clean sheet would help ease concerns surrounding Newcastle’s defensive performances.
