This could have been one of Roma’s most famous European nights, but it wasn’t to be.There was massive anticipation in the air as Roma vs Real Madrid brought Champions League football back to the Stadio Olimpico for the first time since 2019.
Adding to the drama was the return of former manager José Mourinho alongside a star-studded Madrid squad.
Even with Roma’s strong recent Serie A form, few expected them to go toe-to-toe with the Spanish giants. Yet, Roma took an early lead and astonishingly built a 3-1 advantage with just 10 minutes left on the clock. Up to that moment, it looked like an all-time classic performance.

Alas, a disastrous late collapse saw Roma surrender three late goals, falling 4-3 to a 90th-minute winner by former defender Antonio Rüdiger.
As the dust settles, here are three key takeaways from a wild night at the Olimpico.
1. Playing Without Fear
Before kick-off, the Curva Sud proudly displayed a tifo reading ‘Sine Muto’—Latin for ‘Without Fear.’
The team took that message to heart. For the first 20 minutes, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men pressed high and dominated early proceedings.
Their aggressive, front-footed tactics paid off when Maarten de Roon curled in a superb opening goal from outside the box, sending the stadium into heroics.
Even after Kylian Mbappé equalized via a deflection, Roma didn’t flinch. By half-time, they had registered more possession and twice as many shots as Madrid. While the match ended in heartbreak, Roma proved they belong at this level and won’t just be making up the numbers in the group stage.
2. Costly Set-Piece Failures
The main cause of Roma’s downfall was a glaring inability to defend corners in the final 10 minutes: 3–2 Goal: Endrick headed down a corner, forcing Pierluigi Gollini to parry into the path of Carlos Espi. 3–3 Goal: Arda Güler’s delivery found Endrick again, who outjumped the defence to power home the equalizer.3–4 Goal: Another Güler corner led to Rüdiger’s late winner at the back post.
While stand-in keeper Gollini made four solid saves during open play, the presence of first-choice goalkeeper Mile Svilar was sorely missed.
Regardless of who is in goal, allowing the under-6ft Endrick to win two uncontested headers highlights defensive lapses that Gasperini must fix immediately.
3. Rodrigo Mora is Ready for the Big Stage
Early injuries forced Manu Koné and Paulo Dybala off, paving the way for teenage prospect Rodrigo Mora to enter the high-stakes match.Replacing Dybala on the left wing, Mora displayed remarkable composure.

Key Contribution:
Just five minutes after coming on, he delivered a perfectly weighted assist for Donyell Malen to put Roma 2–1 ahead.
By the Numbers:
Finished with an 82% passing accuracy and 10 ball carries against world-class opposition.
Mora showed he possesses the technical quality and agility required for elite European football, giving Gasperini every reason to trust him with more minutes going forward.
