Romeo Lavia produced a magnificent midfield masterclass to inspire Chelsea to a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Head coach Xabi Alonso has singled out the Belgian international for special praise, highlighting his growing confidence and incredible transformation in recent weeks.
The 22-year-old was named Player of the Match by the Blues faithful after delivering a complete performance in the center of the pitch. After battling persistent injury issues that disrupted the early stages of his Chelsea career, Lavia appears to have put those fitness struggles behind him, playing a dominant role as Chelsea secured three vital Premier League points.
Complete Midfield Dominance at Stamford Bridge
Lavia was the driving force behind Chelsea’s improved second-half display. The young midfielder controlled the tempo of the game, consistently linking the backline with the forward players and executing precise passes under pressure. His ability to regain possession and transition quickly was key to unlocking the Manchester United defense.
His most influential moment arrived early in the second half when he pressed aggressively in midfield to win back the ball. Lavia immediately fed Morgan Rogers, who drove forward through the visitors’ defense before chipping a delicate finish over Senne Lammens to break the deadlock. Cole Palmer later sealed the win from the penalty spot.
Speaking after the match, Xabi Alonso expressed his delight with Lavia’s form:
“It was a top performance. In the last three weeks, I’ve seen a Romeo in top form. He is feeling good and feeling confident. His game, from a midfielder’s point of view, was very complete. He has done so many good things and I’m happy for him. He deserves huge recognition.”

Alonso further elaborated on how the Belgian controlled the operational rhythm:
“He has done so many things right. He was always connecting the defence with the attacking players, he was able to switch the game, he has taken many right decisions, was very dynamic and competitive. So I think, not just this game but in the last two or three weeks, he has been playing at a very good level and I’m very happy for him.”
Overcoming Physical Challenges with Mental Resilience
What made Lavia’s exertion even more remarkable was his ability to complete back-to-back 90-minute fixtures inside 72 hours. Having played the full duration against Liverpool at Anfield in midweek, Lavia stepped up once again in the absence of Jordan Henderson, partnering Moises Caicedo to overrun United’s engine room.
Alonso emphasized that mental strength played a huge role in overcoming physical fatigue:
“We knew Jordan was not feeling that well and we know Rom is feeling better, is feeling stronger, is feeling more confident to go with more minutes and with more load. And he’s gone from playing the whole game at Anfield, to not even 72 hours later playing that way and with that energy. Sometimes the head is more important than the legs and now his head is in a good place.”
Morgan Rogers Targets Greater Ruthlessness in Attack
While Lavia dictated play from deep, forward Morgan Rogers was equally impactful in front of goal. The 24-year-old England international took his tally to six goals and four assists in all competitions this term, but insists he is striving to become even more clinical.
Despite his brilliant solo effort, Rogers acknowledged that he wants to develop a ruthless edge to his game:
“I think being more clinical in front of goal, being more ruthless in and around the box, is something that previously I was a bit disappointed in myself because I’d score a nice goal every once in a while, but I wouldn’t score the easy goals. I’m trying to work on that here. I’m trying to improve in my final actions, so that’s my biggest one. I’m an attacker, so I try to score goals and assist and create chances, and I want to keep improving. I’m not there yet, but it’s a good start!”

Recalling his spectacular opening strike against Manchester United, Rogers detailed his thought process as the space opened up:
“I knew it was a counter-attacking opportunity to drive, and I think Estevao made the run on the outside. I was just going to keep driving and I was looking to play him, but then the space just kind of opened up and I just kept going. Then it was just about being composed in front of goal and luckily it went in.”
“It was nice to see it go in the back of the net at an important time in the game. So that’s the most important thing for me, that I can make a difference to the game and ultimately we go on and win the game because of it, so I’m happy.”
Building Momentum Under Alonso
Having joined Chelsea from Aston Villa, Rogers expressed how much he is enjoying his development at Stamford Bridge and taking on leadership responsibilities within a talented squad:
“I’m loving it. It’s a different challenge, a new challenge, and I’m really enjoying playing with these wonderful quality players. It’s just about the team coming together as a whole. There are some good times, bad times, but I’ve just got to be a bit of a leader, stick to what I know and do the best I can. So we just need to keep going.”
With Lavia finding top form and Rogers continually adding goals, Xabi Alonso’s side will look to maintain their upward trajectory in the Premier League.
